The setting of Fly By Night is a dark, politically intricate world constantly on the brink of a return to the civil war, religious intolerance and tyranny it has only recently emerged from. The setting of Fly By Night is as important as its characters: the story takes place in an alternate version of the eighteenth century in a world where a long-lasting interregnum has led to a “fractured realm” of city-states precariously controlled by rivalling guilds: the Company of Stationers, printers and book-binders who control the written word the Company of Locksmiths, against whom no door can be locked and the Company of Watermen, who control the rivers and those who travel through them. And words mean the world to Mosca: unlike most people in her world she is literate, and she craves the words and stories she hasn’t been able to access since her father’s death.
