There can be little doubt that all these types of plays will be in evidence tomorrow.īefore we get ahead of ourselves and anticipate the pomp and circumstance of events at Westminster Abbey, we must discuss the copious hours of build-up. But let us not forget that Stratford’s finest also wrote comedies and tragedies, as well as that elusive sub-genre, the late romance. The most obvious choice, of course, would be one of the history plays – there are, famously, a lot of kings in Shakespeare. Which drama might be selected? Shakespeare wrote 37 plays – and it is tough to think of any that might not be apposite in one way or another, even if not all of them might be seemly for a theatre company with “royal” in its name.
On Sunday, the Royal Shakespeare Company will mark the coronation of King Charles III via Ncuti Gatwa, the new star of Doctor Who, performing excerpts from an as-yet unannounced Shakespeare play.
